Get past the seedy-sounding name and push open two heavy wooden doors, and you’ll have found yourself in Bangkok’s best gin bar—and the city’s worst-kept secret. Teens, as it’s known locally, has been credited with making Soi Nana, a small shophouse-lined lane on the fringes of Chinatown, the hottest address in the city. The dimly lit space is tiny: there are only 15 seats and two bartenders who work elbow-to-elbow behind a small wooden bar with a huge stash of gin. As for the decor, there are retro Thai movie posters, a vintage piano, a teetering (which leads to an office) and a crumbling wall.

Konbi is diminutive and almost reminiscent of a restaurant in Tokyo, with an omakase-style bar that seats 12. There’s also a window if you’re in a rush and need a snack and coffee to go. But sitting at the lunch counter is a wonderful experience if you have the time; watching the deft team create Konbi’s exacting dishes is a form of theater all its own.
